Room for improvement
Episode 1: There is plenty of room for improvement, since this is only episode one, but I’ve been looking forward to this and I’m disappointed, given the hype, the quality of the trailers, and the quality of the Guardian’s other journalism. Sadly, episode one seemed to me to contain little more than a rehashing of the top headings in the history of AI’s development, information that is widely available and felt basic even to my limited amateur interest in the subject. The presentation is distractingly over-produced, with lots of sci-fi music and sound effects getting in the way of the story being told. While there is, of course, a need for a summary of the story so far at the beginning of a series like this, it feels like the background could’ve been condensed into half the time, giving the rest to the voices and personal stories of the people involved. For a 40-minute listen, it felt like there were a lot of missed opportunities. There’s clearly a solid interview with Hinton in here, and by far the most engaging thing about the episode is hearing elements of his personal story; his early interest in science, the creation of the software, and the subsequent sale. Unfortunately, this element of the episode feels very under-utilised. A podcast like this has the opportunity to lean heavily into presenting new and interesting information about the subject in a straightforward, journalistic style. Episode 1 misses the mark. Hopefully the potential this series clearly has will start to show itself as new episodes are released in the coming weeks.
