“AJC’S “BREAKDOWN” will appeal to those who loved the first season of Public Radio’s “Serial” podcast, and is even inspired by and modeled after “Serial” – the AJC admits this. “Breakdown” is interesting and well made… but not as good as “Serial,” as you might imagine. It’s hard to top Public Radio’s unique blend of casualness and professionalism, and it doesn’t help when your narrator is a newspaper reporter rather than a seasoned radio person. Also, the “true crime” case in “Breakdown” is less compelling than the case in “Serial” (or at least, feels less compelling because of the way it’s presented) and AJC’s constant prompts throughout the series to “visit our webpage, visit our webpage” gives this listener the impression that AJC benefits somehow by the number of website visitors it gets, and perhaps the podcast was made only as a ploy to drive more traffic to it.
