“Life-long hockey fan/player & Flyers nut... I listen regularly to this and 3 other NHL hockey podcasts (2 of which are Flyers-centered). This is my least favorite of them all, and I want to provide constructive feedback without being disrespectful.
My biggest issue with the content in general is the authoritative tone from which hosts offer their opinions. I’m fine with disagreeing with the GM and/or coach, but I’d like specifics and reasons to support these opinions. So many times I’ve heard “it’s so obvious Hak is out of his depth”, but with little or no specific reasons to support this opinion. Not to back up Hak — I disagree with some of his usage and lineup decisions too — but to hear the hosts of this show you’d think the man never played or coached the game (despite the fact he’s probably forgotten more about hockey than the combined experience these hosts offer). You don’t need direct experience to have an opinion, but it helps (and if you don’t have the experience, at least offer support for your thinking). I don’t know how to say it nicely... hearing some of the banter on this podcast gives me the reaction of hearing fans at the WFC screaming “shoot it” when there’s no lane or support to stop a counter attack should the shot get blocked.
The stat dude on the show (Charlie?) does attempt to justify some opinions with advanced metrics, and (to me) he’s the closest thing of an authority on the panel. He at least attempts to support opinions consistently.
Again, I’m not trying to be rude. Some things I really like about the podcast:
— 2 women (my other NHL podcasts only have dudes, and hockey is for everyone)
— the group obviously has fun together, which makes the show more than bearable for a listener who frequently disagrees with the hosts’ opinions. I’d like to have some beers with the crew and not talk hockey.
— consistency: the team works to put something up almost every pre and post game. I like hearing tales from opponents’ bloggers.”
