“On what planet does it make sense to have a conservative hack like Amity Shlaes to opine on Presidents? One need only listen to her take on Carter versus Trump to know she’s a lousy economist as well as lousy historian. Carter inherited economic problems, stagflation started under Ford, and sacrificed his Presidency to the Fed to wring inflation out of the economy. On the other hand Trump inherited a juggernaut and coasted with it until his incompetence inevitably resulted in a worse economy than it should have been during the pandemic. Oh, then there’s the little thing about tens if not hundreds of thousands of excess deaths from mismanagement and politicization of COVID-19. That Trump was 41 and not dead last was a gift.
One of the worst episodes of this generally good podcast.”
