Donna’s victim blaming and commitment to ignorance is so disappointing, but I feel like the journalism tried to honour the good in her, as infuriating as her continuing denial is. I have an autistic family member who shares much in common with Matthew’s difficult childhood, but he would never want to hurt people—Matthew clearly knew what he was doing. Matthew is essentially an incel who decided to control and torment women online, instead of ploughing into a crowd with his car or shooting up a school. It’s not neurodivergence, it’s entitled, toxic masculinity.
