At times insensitive probing and platforming of voices
More evidence based research should have been undertaken on the impact of bullying for children with intellectual disabilities, autism and mental health conditions. This crime is a perfect example of the behavioural patterns created through complex trauma and societal exclusion for those with pre-existing conditions. This podcast allowed other victims with no informed understanding on the research base about neurodivergence or trauma to comment on his functional capacity and minimise his experience of abandonment and victimisation as a child - and it was very hard to listen to. At one point a person without disabilities almost out right says if she went on to be fine from that school he should have too … which is factually incorrect and very dangerous perspective from an equal rights framework. There can be multiple victims in a story and the host should challenge misguided of misinformed assumptions. He needn’t be a monster for the stalking victims pain to be real. Matthew’s pain as a person with autism who was bullied, excluded and socially isolated without appropriate supports from education health or welfare services following interface with justice system can be acknowledged as in some ways more difficult than those victims who are not from stigmatised minorities, living in intact families, flourishing socially and participating in the community. Prevention lies in community support not vengeance and retribution. At points his behaviour is characterised as ‘revenge’ rather than a lack of pro social skills, which is very hypocritical given we as a society are treating Matthew with revenge ourselves - through the punitive justice system.

But the mother is wrong in my view to believe him when he says ‘I didn’t really realise the harm I was causing’. As some of his victims said it was exactly the harm that gave him a kick. Anyway if you are arrested that is a fairly strong message that you’re doing something very wrong. Plus...Read full review »

The first three episodes are interesting --though also exhausting-- but I kept listening to make sure the culprit eventually gets arrested. But 3 long episodes would have been enough. Once you get to the latter episodes the reporter is practically pulling strangers off the street for...Read full review »
