Liza Sekaggya is an international human rights lawyer who graduated from Nottingham University, UK, with a Master of Human Rights Law (LL.M). She is the Co-founder and CEO of Phenomenal Women Global (PWG). An ardent advocate for gender equality and women’s rights, especially for women of African descent, she co-founded this non-profit organization based in Geneva, Switzerland, and Uganda. PWG’s mission is to connect, advance, and empower women by providing leadership training, mentorship for women and girls, and support for professional development. PWG creates a safe space to discuss strategies for women advancing in leadership, career, and business and potential challenges faced, as well as eliminating discrimination against women and gender-based violence that stifles women’s progress. With this mission, we seek to promote women’s participation in decisions that affect their lives on national and global issues, as well as enable them to thrive in their given careers, professions, and businesses.
Liz's career path in human rights was profoundly influenced by the genocide that occurred in Rwanda, which caused an apparently visible influx of refugees in Uganda. She subsequently joined the UN High Commissioner for Refugees as an intern at the beginning of her career to support their cause. She has worked for the United Nations for 17 years as a Human Rights Officer in different capacities in Geneva, Kenya, and Zimbabwe. She has worked with several NGOs, including Save the Children Norway in Uganda, as the Program Coordinator-Social Protection. She has experience in criminal litigation and worked with an NGO in New Orleans, Louisiana (USA), handling appeals cases of people on death row. She has worked with various organizations, providing legal support to child abuse victims, juvenile offenders, and refugees.
Liza was a visiting scholar at Harvard University Law School, where she researched the rights of persons with disabilities. She has also benefited from several leadership trainings, including the EMERGE leadership program for United Nations women leaders. She is a certified John Maxwell Leadership Coach and has coached and mentored women and men in leadership, business, and other areas. She attended Harvard Kennedy School and obtained an executive education certificate on Women and power and Havard Public Health schools, where she studied health and human rights.
