Northern Afghanistan has the highest maternal mortality ratio in the world. Meanwhile, women just across the border in Tajikistan are sixty-five times less likely to die in childbirth. Kylea Liese's research, collected during more than years of fieldwork, explains this striking variation with ethnographic data that brings anthropology, medicine and global health together.
