“I was really excited when I heard about this podcast, but completely turned off by their use of the f** word in the first episode. For a podcast centered on women’s experiences, and they discuss several instances of how women are treated “lesser than” in society, it was disconcerting that two heterosexual women would then use a gay slur when discussing the exchange between Carrie and Skipper in the pilot episode. Even for comedians, racial and homophobic slurs should be off limits.
That sort of cultural unawareness continues into the their discussion of the episode’s themes. There’s only two episodes out at the time of this review, so perhaps this will improve, but their comparison of the episode to today are limited strictly to their heterosexual cisgender lens.
I assumed the podcast would really critique Sex and the City through discussing race, class, sexuality, gender, etc., but discussion fails to be more than talking about exes and their version of “feminism” which is nothing more than mainstream white feminism. An unsavory comment lamenting third wave feminists who support porn was confusing. The same can be said for their snide comments regarding anal sex. Wait... Isn’t this a podcast about a sex-positive show? Every time the hosts say “women,” it is clear they are only talking about straight white women.
Even as a Sex and the City super-fan, I can’t bring myself to continue listening. It does not appear the hosts a wide enough world view (or sensitivity...) to really begin dissecting the heavy topics they want to unpack.”
