Oksana Serhiyivna Baiul-Farina (née Baiul; born November 16, 1977) is a retired Ukrainian figure skater, the 1993 world champion and 1994 Olympic champion in ladies' singles. She was the first Olympic champion from Ukraine to compete under its flag and the first Olympic champion of independent Ukraine in any sport.After winning gold in 1994, Baiul moved to the United States for professional skating tours and shows, later becoming involved in TV appearances and benefit skates. She has lived in the U.S. since then and published two books in 1997: a memoir and a skating guide.Early Life
Baiul was born in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukrainian SSR. Her parents divorced when she was two, and her father disappeared shortly after. Raised by her mother, Marina, and her maternal grandparents, she faced significant loss early on, including her mother's death from cancer when Baiul was 13. After moving to Odesa in 1992, Baiul lived primarily in a dormitory supported by the state due to her skating promise.
