“As I read the reviews of other listeners, I was surprised to see how many people were upset about the podcast being “woke”. In the media would choose to consume, including the books we choose to read we are following our political ideals. I think it’s surprising for listeners to be upset when recommenders recommend books that align with their beliefs. I listen to many book podcasts, and they all recommend books aligned to their beliefs. I think the difference here is that there is more of a celebration when books include LGBTQ or #ownvoices. Other but podcasts are also talking about similar books, but aren’t describing the population of the book.
Overall, I really enjoy this podcast. I think the audio quality is really good, especially in the newer seasons. I feel like the format has changed overtime which has brought new life into the podcast and I think having a dynamic show is really good. I appreciate the lack of ads. Again, when you’re not advertising companies, you can be more open with your beliefs, which I think is reflected because they aren’t doing ads.
All of the regulars are well spoken when they speak about their books. Not all of them are books I want to read or genres that I am interested in. However, I feel like I gain a good general knowledge for various genres so I can recommend books to others.
I also read a lot of comments about Kaytee’s giggling or laughing. And I think it’s frustrating that for a woman her voice is critiqued on maybe sounding to “feminine” or “childish”. I appreciate that she isn’t robotic and allows her personality to be part of the show.
Because my opinions do align with the hosts, but I also think it’s unrealistic to think that reading isn’t political.”
