The UN and World Bank envision that by 2030 every individual in the world will have a digital identity. Digital ID promises to transform Africa's economic and political landscape. It holds the power to unlock more inclusive digital economies, increase access to government services, and elevate political accountability. As African nations move forward with ID programs, however, it is imperative that they adopt standard laws and norms that ensure data protection and regional interoperability. Join the CSIS Africa Program for a discussion on September 11th from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the role that digital identity will play in Africa’s future. Vera Songwe, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), will first deliver a keynote address via video conference and explore how ECA, in conjunction with the African Union and the Omidyar Network, is spearheading a framework that will empower and protect citizens through digital identification technology. Magdi Amin (Omidyar Network), Christopher Burns (U.S. Global Development Lab USAID), and Vyjayanti Desai (World Bank, Identification for Development Initiative (ID4D)) will then address how digital identity can unlock the digital economy and digital trade in Africa, as well as African-led initiatives to implement normative frameworks regulating digital identity, and potential avenues for U.S. private sector and government support.    This event is made possible through support from the Omidyar Network.
