“I was just looking a podcast about Euro Truck Simulator; I knew I was in for a ride when one of the episodes pivoted to a pizza shop. DKLPs has an unparalleled sense of artifice that turns what could have been a silly gimmick show into a clever, layered experience via creative editing. It doesn’t hurt that Daniel is so charismatic and talkative that he can charm his way through cooking eggs and toast and still make it a fun episode—no, seriously, he does that. His zeal for the early Wiggles is infectious. What makes DKLPs unexpectedly compelling is the uplifting life story arc which unfolds underneath his (mostly) digital misadventures. From the earliest days of the podcast (why is he outside a children’s hospital?) to the joyful episodes featuring his son, Daniel’s podcast is an unintentionally moving portrait of a father who retains his youthful creativity while facing one of life’s greatest challenges and gifts. I’ve never been one for parasociality, but this podcast is so effortlessly personal and warm that you’ll find yourself wondering how your friend Daniel and his kid are doing from time to time. *** Content warning: if you don’t like bugs and spiders, heads up about the “Power Plant” episode in the Pokémon Blue Nuzlocke and the “NOCKAT Weather Report Saga”, although the latter features Daniel at his creative peak. Also worth mentioning for content are a couple of episodes where he audibly breaks down and eventually invokes suicide (via music selection) due to his extreme frustration with the game he’s playing.”
