“Firstly I will say that this is a beautifully executed and engrossing podcast. An elevated audio book with extremely talented voice actors, compelling characters and highly immersive sound editing. The plot is tropey and frustrating at times but genuinely engrossing. The thing that frustrates me the most is Tess’s (who is probably the closest contender to a main character) internalized misogyny. Tess epitomizes the “Not Like Other Girls” trope; stunningly beautiful despite opting to wear comfortable, casual clothes and no makeup; avoids female friendship; whom men are irresistibly attracted because she is apparently so much more profound than any other women they’ve encountered. I could ascribe this to the characters perspective rather than the writers but for the fact that other young women are written to be vapid and social media obsessed. The most heinous example of this (and the point where I stopped listening altogether to podcast that I was otherwise hooked to) was a scene where Tess recalls a day at the beach. Opting to read rather than sunbathe—wow a woman who READS rather than bettering her appearance?!? Unheard of— Tess
speculates something along the lines of “what it’s like for other young women with heads devoid of thoughts.” I will probably resume the podcast because I’m curious to see how it ends, am naively hopeful Tess will shed her pick me attitude, and, frankly, have little else to do during this second wave of heightened Covid cases.”
