Informative, funny, insightful, respectful and relevant
I first found this podcast via the TikTok of Dan M, who debunks rumours and misinformation around Christianity and the Bible. The two Dans have put together a masterpiece of a podcast in Data Over Dogma. The perfect podcast for any person interested in biblical history and how the bible impacts us today too. Hosts The chemistry between the two hosts, Dan M and Dan B is palpable right from the get-go. Dan M is the scholarly expert and academic whizz who keeps listeners engaged with interesting and easy-to-understand concepts, analogies and linguistics. Dan B is excellent at representing the average listener’s perspective and asking great questions as well as clarifications if needed. He also throws in a slapper of a joke too, sometimes. Both hosts have good, clear voices and their microphone set ups are high quality (this would impact more than you think on the listening experience of the podcast). The hosts are also careful to be respectful and sensitive to the subject matter. For a podcast with a slightly atheistic twist, the hosts never insult the religion itself nor the people who hold the bible dear to them, which is really refreshing to hear. Guests are also regularly featured on the show and I am always excited to hear from them. Guests chosen are experts in their field, and the two Dans ask some really insightful questions about the guests’ chosen subject. I particularly enjoyed the talk with Francesca Stavrakopoulou about the corporeality of God as well as the place of child sacrifice in the ancient world. Content The content of the show has a different topic each week related to the Bible, with podcasts often being an hour long or over. The two Dans often explore individual biblical chapters and verses which are popularly quoted, or sometimes we explore larger concepts, as well as thorough explanations on how different readings of the Bible impact how we worship today. I find the content engaging and enjoyable, it is well-explained by Dan M, and Dan B always seems to ask the questions that pop into my head- so it makes for a really fun listen. Format The theme music for the podcast is short and pleasant, and the intro/outdo is minimal. One of my biggest bug bears of many podcasts is when the theme music drags on, or the hosts take a large amount of time to introduce the podcast at the beginning and then spend 5 minutes + plugging their socials at the end. Data Over Dogma is short and sweet and delves right into the interesting content. There are a number of segments in the podcast including “Alright, let’s see it” and “What does that mean?” Which are myth-busting and explanatory segments, respectively. These also work to move the show on in good time. The hosts talk at a good pace and move on without fiddling, which allows the podcast to flow nicely. I think that any follower of abrahamic religion would be comfortable with listening to this podcast, the themes are always treated with care and the content of the podcast will open up your eyes to new and interesting perspectives on scripture and how the ancient world is different to ours today. Themes The two Dans don’t hesitate to get stuck into some tricky themes such as how homosexuality was perceived in the ancient world and how scripture impacts LGBT+ people today, everything is spoken about respectfully and with sensitivity. To challenge long-standing myths about the Bible (and Christianity in general) is a tough gig but the two Dans do it exceptionally well. This falls in line with the work that Dan M is doing on his TikTok account, which is always fascinating. To conclude, I am always looking forward to the next weekly edition of the podcast and learning a new thing or two from the two Dans. Listening to an episode of the podcast really gives me that big-brain feeling, and is helping me to challenge and consider my own thoughts and perceptions about the Bible and wider Christian beliefs.

This is the podcast I’ve been waiting for. I’m an atheist who was raised Catholic. I’ve been obsessed with religion ever since I left and I really appreciate this academic approach to the Bible. Big thanks to Scathing Atheist for turning me on to you folks.

Dan does an except job of presenting the interpretations and meanings in the Bible while leaving biases out (as much as humanly possible). As an atheist living in the Bible Belt, Dan’s content helps me understand the Bible for discussion with my theist friends and family.
