“Leavenworth was the first prison referred to as “The Big House.” It’s the oldest federal prison. Also, “sent up the river” first referred to Leavenworth. It sits on the Missouri River, and the train tracks, on the border of northern Kansas/Missouri, just north of the two Kansas Cities. Sing Sing might also use these terms, but to say they originated there isn’t correct. Leavenworth was the first federal prison ever built and is the oldest to use these terms.
Sorry to correct, but I grew up, and live, in KCMO, and living in “flyover” country often means we don’t exist to the rest of the country, or matter. It’s important, to us, to own our history. We can’t even win a Super Bowl with people knowing which Kansas City (Missouri, by the way). It grates to hear NY, especially, dismiss the Midwest. I know it won’t be corrected and don’t expect that. Just noting it, because facts matter, and the people and their history here matter.
Love these originals. Wish there were more. Please keep turning out amazing shows. Just don’t forget there’s a whole country out here besides NY. Thank you. 😊”
