The ‘massacre’ carried out by Major Mitchell and his party of explorers was in retaliation to a large so called ‘war party’ of around 150 armed Aboriginal men following them for a number of days.
Mitchell’s men ambushed the aborigines at a place now called Mt Dispersion and killed at least 7 of them.
Mitchell called it ‘self defence’ but his critics have argued that he should have tried to negotiate with them first.”
