Please explain why André is such a big deal…
I’m in the Arts and have a fair general knowledge of Art History, but not an academic one. What does it mean to say that André solved the problem of Art’s relationship to the floor? Is it about reclaiming the “low” space, as a metaphor for upturning traditional social hierarchies? I think “solved” is a very strong word for a problem that probably only became a problem when André said it was. “Raised the question of” might be a more measured way of expressing it. What comes across is his huge arrogance and that is reinforced by the use by Art historians of such categorical language as “solved”. I really don’t think anyone should be called a genius in their own lifetimes - only the shakedown of history will tell. Ana Mendieta, on the other hand, made art that has already proved its longevity and power. What a waste.

More reviews of Death of an Artist
Compelling exploration of the art world subculture and it’s connection to a long ago death. The insider view is very helpful in drawing connections between the trial outcome and context of the time.
