“I have to confess: I listened to a whole episode on another feed I follow in one of those “[Podcast Name] presents…” episodes. I hated it so much I couldn’t commit to any more. Most of the whole painful episode was taken up with overly ponderous, pretentiously slow voiceover of a battle scene. Worse, it was backed by cliche, overly dramatic mood music. Unfortunately, that kind of atmospheric effect is meant to emphasize a moment - to lift the listener up to a pinnacle of feeling. Using it as background just leads to listener burnout. Worse, it becomes annoying. So yeah, that was a thing.
I was happy to finally hear it ending, and was even about to say “OK, I’ve done my duty and given it a chance,” but no. Then the podcast delivered up different battle related dialogue backed by an endless whiny song in a minor key delivered in an gloriously off-key whine. Ugh.
My take-away? Too much of anything is not helpful. If there were glimmers of something more substantial in the plot, these ill conceived audio props suffocated them in their sleep.”
