“Dang. This podcast was very well done, especially humanizing folks who have been incarcerated. I appreciate showing how stress, anxiety, side effects of anti psychotics greatly affects folks who are living with mental illness. However, the way they portray domestic violence as an “everyday event” and not a big deal is really harmful. Especially with his history of strangulation, which is strongly linked to femicide, is very victim blaming, and excusatory of folks who have abused. I feel the way the podcast portrays his ex wife, who remember was (one of) the victims of his domestic violence as someone who was trying to bait him or trick him is ridiculous. They do not know the situation of power and control that happened between those two. They do not know the extent this man went to abuse and greatly hurt this family. Domestic violence is about power and control. With how the ex wife is responding to the texts of Josh, there is definitely more to the story than this “poor guy who hurts people when he drinks, so let’s blame alcohol”. Alcohol is not an excuse for domestic abuse. Mental illness is not an excuse for mental illness. Domestic violence is a choice. I really hope that New Hampshire Public Radio connects with their state domestic violence coalition or local domestic violence service provider and gets the training and information they need. Folks who have perpetrated can change and I hope this man is able to, however, excusing a history of domestic violence is very problematic.”
