“Karl has done a great deal for science and science communication in Australia. He is a charismatic entertainer, and yes a self-promoter, who is an expert at turning questions to which he doesn’t know the answer around so that he can tell an interesting story, or answer a question he does know. Some of his stories and scientific facts are hillarious. I met Karl and he is as zany and enthused about science as he seems on radio, however, his reply of “Don’t” when I asked him how to get into the science communication industry does not sit well with me. Unfortunately therefore, it would seem his enthusiasm for science does not carry over into encouraging people to be like him and communicate, and this is reenforced in this podcast by the fact that he makes it seem like you need to be a mad professor to understand or communicate science, which is not a good thing and is untrue. Notwithstanding this, his enthusiasm for science shines through in this podcast, and he has done much for the popularisation of science in Australia. It looks as though most subscribers to Karl’s podcast also subscribe to comedy podcasts, which is actually a good thing as it takes science to everyone, but is also representative of this podcast.”
