“Listening to this first podcast I am taken back to my roots once again. I try to travel to Italy every year, exploring different areas, because each carries with it a flavour all of its own. My parents are from the Friuli region, our dinners sitting around the table not only held the food of their area but the rich history of our families.
While I stroll the streets and markets of each town I visit I wonder why they left at all. It was after World War Two and there was not much left for them. I understand the real struggles they endured. My dad took my brother and myself back in 1967.
I was only 13, and the summer was filled with rich long lasting friendships, my dads homestead is a historic home now. No one lives there, abandoned, lonely. I often pray that someday I could purchase this treasure .
This wish is always at the back of my mind. Maybe I will be lucky someday. For now I know I must return to Italy, yearly if possible, because my life as I know and feel it is not a dress rehearsal. It is to be grasped, nourished and enjoyed in the country of my ancestors.”
