“Worth listening to. This narrative of Ashoka, the mighty, benevolent and able administrator of a unified subcontinent, makes a lot of sense. Because it explains how he used religion to both unify and exclude, while crafting a legacy through edicts, that befits the wiliest of politicians. And ‘benevolence’ in Ashoka’s time must have had a very different connotation to how it is understood in our times.”
