“Ok, so a series on THIS topic at THIS time is brave. One can only imagine how many bear traps there are to be avoided lest the unwary fall into a pit of baying outrage. That said it’s an interesting topic and I plunged in hoping that a balanced path could be found. First episode: great. Second: uh-oh…. There’s a definite narrative being told here (see the part about thumbs being cut off - presenter 1 ‘the evidence is sketchy’, présenter 2 ‘oh that definitely happened and it’s awful’ / the appetite to force the claim famine was acceptable in a policy to grow opium poppies rather than food / the quick shift off the subject when questions of how the treatment people by savage and fractious rulers left India vulnerable to takeover are examples) I’m going to give ep3 a try and then decide if I’ll continue. It may still be of some use as a basic timeline of events if nothing else but only if my patience is up to overriding the facile narrative driven analysis. But, as I said, it’s to be expected as it’s a brave topic to approach just now…”
