To the cynic, control and taxation but traditionalists say it's the foundational core of the nuclear family, which poses the largest threat to the power of the state. And what of the rights of women? In ancient times a married woman was property, but now marriage protects her rights, not the least of which is financial security and the disincentivizing of desertion. Is love necessary for staying in a marriage, or will marriage keep you in love?
