“Hello! Horror fanatic, fellow podcaster, and sound engineer with 20+ years experience here with some helpful hints...
Dr. McKendry is a legit expert in this field. Her knowledge of horror and its place in society is second to none. She is an informed and important voice for the horror community. The content of this show is excellent, and it *could* be one of the greatest horror podcasts of all time.
That said, this show has its flaws. Her delivery is very distracting. There’s a ragged breath between every sentence, and a lot of mouth-noises happening between the words that detract from the excellent content. Most of this can be easily fixed. If she breathed in through her nose and then let the air in her lungs propel the words out of her mouth at a slightly slower rate, then took further breaths through her nose and repeated the pattern, that would take care of most of the issue.
There are also some distracting production flaws here. Going back to the breathing and mouth noises, there are some relatively cheap DAW add-ons that could further remove the sounds with minimal time/effort... But, even if the producer didn’t want to spend the money on add-ons, a little extra time in post production to edit out the extraneous sounds would be a massive improvement.
Also, when there are guests, the voice levels need to be checked. For example, the “hagsploitation” episode was practically unlistenable, as the guest was so quiet and the host was so loud in the mix that I had to turn my stereo all the way up to hear the guest, only to have my ears blown out every time the host chimed back in. That sucked, because I was actually interested in the topic, but couldn’t get through the episode. (If you remixed and re-released it, that would be awesome!) Balance your levels in post, and compress everything at 4:1 with 10db of gain reduction, and it will make a big difference.
Like I said, the content of this podcast is great and Dr. McKendry is doing excellent work. With just a few tweaks in delivery and production, this could be a perfect five-star podcast.”
