“Molly’s new platform uses dynamically inserted ad content (instead of having the podcast host tout sponsored products). And these ads are like the freakiest internet ads that remind you that your devices are spying on you. But hearing creepy internet ads via audio is so much worse. I found it bone-chilling. At least in a browser you can just shut the site down. At first I noticed the ads on Fast Politics were local, which isn’t so bad, but then it got more insidious. I recognized these ads as being based on the same highly inaccurate profile the data pirates have on me. Products I’ve purchased, pages I’ve viewed, stuff I’ve followed on Pinterest. The iHeart radio platform uses AudioGO for audience targeting. According to the AudioGO site, they offer ad-targeting based on age, gender, geo-location, device type, and scariest of all, “behavior segments.” The fine print on my device says they send my personal data to podcasters I listen to, but they claim it’s anonymized, only associated with a cloud ID. But data pirates can cross-reference this “anonymized” data with your IP address and other data to figure out your real life identity. If you care about data privacy, just say NO to “Fast Politics” and iHeart Radio!”
