Community??! Belonging!?! No way!?!?
So glad Krystl took the leap and made this last year. I didn’t even know this podcast was new and the fact that she couldn’t find anyone documenting our stories and only recently started shows how much still needs to change. When I found this podcast I was shook that there was something in the world of “This American Life” and other podcasts that only told the stories, perspectives and experiences of White Americans, as if they were the only stories important enough to talk about. Knowing that there was something for me, that I could relate to culturally, made me feel less crazy for not necessarily understanding certain references White Americans would talk about or songs or actors and so on. There is so much to say about being able to talk about your story and standing tall and making yourself seen and Krystl and her guests do that so well in this podcast. I used to disown my own culture because I grew up first in spaces where White people were the majority, then Latinx and Black, so it felt like I was just weird for not fitting in anywhere. Late high school, we went to San Francisco, Daly City specifically and I was quaking from how dense our community was concentrated there. It was a whole other world I knew nothing about, especially growing up in an area where the only Filipinos we hung out with were a few close family friends. The internet is so powerful and being able to reach people and find our community has, as cliche as it sounds, helped me feel less alone and like all the experiences and feelings I’ve had were validated and that they made sense. Filipino podcasts like these, TFAL, and the Filipino community on Instagram are places where I am able to access a community I wouldn’t have known otherwise. So thank you Krystl, and to my Filipinas reading this, please keep sharing your stories because they have impact and they’ve helped me create a sense of belonging in a country where I so often felt overlooked, ignored, or dismissed. Thank you guys. Leave reviews so more people can find this! I only found it through Insta after being recommended a Filipina therapist’s account!
