St. Malo: The First Filipino Settlement
Description
In episode 3 of the Filipino History Podcast, we examine one of the first Filipino settlements in the United States. St. Malo, the first Filipino settlement in Louisiana, was a small fishing community located outside New Orleans. Some scholars believe in a common myth that the community was founded in 1763 by Filipino sailors traveling from Mexico. Yet, the evidence shows that St. Malo was most likely established between the 1820s and 1840s.
This podcast covers both life of those at St. Malo and the controversy surrounding the dates of the settlement.
