“For whatever reason it was always in my spirit that I didn’t want to get a doula certification with any particular certifying agency. I was trained with a well known certifying body, but it never felt right to sign the paperwork that would limit my ability to serve my clients however they wanted me to. I didn’t even know about free birth back then, but now that I do, I am even more glad I never certified.
It has been really confronting as a doula to listen to these mamas who have free birthed, with or without doulas. It has challenged me to reevaluate what my role is as a doula for the birthing woman. I’ve said, on multiple occasions, “every woman should have a doula,” and this podcast has really challenged that mindset. Really, every woman who wants a doula should have a doula. And even more so, what is my actual role as a doula? Is it to keep her calm and serene? Or is it to honor her exactly as she is and “hold space?” I’m not even really sure what it means to hold space, but Emilee’s podcast is teaching me, with every woman’s story, how to be better birth keeper.
Furthermore, as a woman who believes children are in her future, what kind of birthing experience do I want to have. What does it really look like to have an autonomous birth? How can I honor the mother in me during my future pregnancies and births? I can’t wait to be able to share my own story of free birth when I have the privilege of bringing life into the world.
Thank you, Emilee! Thank you for your passion, and spirit, and heart for birthing women. I appreciate you and I love your podcast!”
