“Passing 400+ weekly episodes, Freethought Radio has been my go-to broadcast to stay up on the growth of the atheist movement in America. The program is the broadcast outlet for the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), the national group of 20,000 or so atheists, agnostics, humanists, and freethinkers. The show is entertaining and informative and includes interviews, news on church/state separation issues, and musical entertainment having to do with countering the hegemony of religiosity in our culture. Weekly guests range from young local activists, like Zack Kopplin and Jessica Ahlquist, to established international authors and thought leaders, like Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins.
The quality of the broadcasts is impeccable. The two-host format is refreshing, and the professionalism of the show avoids the banal banter of some of the folksy podcasts one finds online. Dan's piano renditions of freethought tunes are delightful and serve as enjoyable transitions between segments.
Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor, who are married and are Co-Presidents of the FFRF, have solid bona fida as trailblazers in the atheist community. Annie Laurie is a cofounder of FFRF and heir to a bourgeoning dynasty of feminist and freethought leadership in the Madison, Wisconsin area. Dan Barker is a former evangelistic preacher and minister of music who found he could no longer drink the Kool-Aid of faith.
Dan and Annie Laurie are feisty and unapologetic about their lack of belief in the supernatural and their opposition to the incursions of faith into public life. Their attitude is an invigorating breath of fresh air to non-believers, who can often feel isolated and left out by the mores and customs in a strident, misogynistic church-going society.
My reason for recommending this broadcast is this: if you don't have the stomach for a personal fight with the pious, biased, and self-righteous in society, support and follow those that do. Dan and Annie Laurie are in the vanguard in of those who stand up to religious bloviators.”
