The Grote Markt, over 1000 years old, is the central square of the city of Groningen, both literally and symbolically the heart of the city. This square has been a hub for commerce, justice, and ongoing city governance.
Since 1635, the Goudkantoor, built in the Renaissance style, stands at the corner of the Grote Markt. The two main facades are richly adorned with sandstone sculptures.
