The band initially went by the name The Golden Earrings and released their first single, “Please Go,” in 1965. They shortened their name to Golden Earring in 1969. Golden Earring is best known internationally for their hit singles “Radar Love” (1973), “Twilight Zone” (1982), and “When the Lady Smiles” (1984). Their music style blends rock, hard rock, and progressive rock, with influences from psychedelic rock in their early years. The band’s most enduring lineup included Barry Hay (vocals, guitar, flute), George Kooymans (guitar, vocals), Rinus Gerritsen (bass, keyboards), and Cesar Zuiderwijk (drums). This lineup was remarkably stable for decades, contributing to the band’s longevity and consistent sound. Golden Earring maintained a significant presence in the Dutch and European rock scenes for many years, with a career spanning over five decades. They released numerous albums, both studio and live, and continued to perform until 2021, when they announced their retirement following George Kooymans’ diagnosis with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).
