“Hi Roz!
I started listening to your podcast because ads for it kept popping up on my Facebook. Considering that I love both ghosts and drag queens, it seems my FB ad algorithm hit the nail on the head with your show. And I love it so much. It’s hilarious and has made me laugh out loud in my car numerous times. Thanks for making my commute more creepy AND campy.
I’ve had a number of weird encounters with ghosts or supernatural energies, but this story is the one where I actually saw something.
In 2013, I spent the month of June in the small town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. Truth or Consequences (T or C for short) is probably best known for two things: 1. Being named after a game show. And 2. For being 7 miles away from Elephant Butte, home of David Parker Ray, the Toy-Box Killer. At least those were the two things everyone told me about when I got there.
I was in town for an artist/writers residency. Each resident had a small studio apartment within the fenced in grounds of the residency’s location. On one side of the building, there was an empty grassy plot of land.
One night (it was probably around 3 AM), I woke up with a start. I was asleep, lying on my back, when my eyes snapped open and I immediately thought “There is someone in my room.” It was a confusing feeling because the windows were all closed and the apartment door was locked (I am from Washington DC and don’t believe in small towns where people leave their doors unlocked). As my eyes adjusted to the light, I slowly turned my head towards the front door...
What I saw was the dark outline of a man standing in the doorway.
I immediately jumped up and grabbed my iPhone to use the light from the screen (I don’t know why I thought that would help me but it seemed like the thing to do at the time). Shining my phone towards the door I realized the shadowy man had disappeared.
This only happened once, so I didn’t tell anyone until one of the last days when I casually mentioned it to one of the other artists in residence. She looked at me with wide eyes before telling me how, one morning, she made her bed before tidying up the rest of her studio. She had smoothed out the top sheet but when she walked back over a few minutes later, it looked as if someone had sat down on the edge of the bed. She was alone in her room. It freaked her out so much she had to leave and go for a walk.
I can’t remember if I found this out before or after these incidents but the woman who ran the residency told me about a guy who had lived next door in a trailer. He was a heavy drinker and, after a night of drinking, fell asleep in bed with a cigarette. His trailer caught on fire and he died in the blaze.
I’m pretty sure the figure I saw was the neighbor, who was probably just coming over to see if I had any beer to spare.
Anyway, hope you enjoy this story and I can’t wait for more of your podcasts!”
