Relationships
Mac Rogers / Gideon Media with another show about relationships. Listeners are dropped right into the action without explanation, demonstrating Roger’s facility with the medium: the show takes more words to describe than are spoken into listeners’ ears. It’s a show that finds ways to turn inner monologues into dialog, and takes audience into uncomfortable proximity of big characters, toying with the forced intimacy of podcasts, right on the edge of verbal slapstick exaggerations, and also has that one necessarily audio component (that’s not a tape recorder!). We get to know more than we might want to, in this case via frank discussions about bodily functions, the painful rearrangements of human relationships, as well as our relationship with our government, military, and environment. Just when you’ve had enough of a worn out marriage & some crass heteronormative dating scenes, you’re in negotiations for new kinds partnerships and pluralities. Everyone is always managing everyone else for dramatic tension and plot, and everyone is equally important for meaning. SciFi Audio Drama at its best — the kind that’s solving problems.

I am completely enjoying this podcast, however as someone in their upper 40s who still considers themselves “young” it irks me how someone in their early 50s is referred to as “grandpa” in the podcast and continually referred to as old. I don’t consider this age old.

Performances and writing are great. Right amount of foley to set the scene, but not to the point of being camp (which a lot of podcast dramas do). Looking forward to seeing what happens next! Great work, Gideon Media.
