Prior to becoming Director of GFW, he served in a joint Forester position with The American Chestnut Foundation and GFW from 2013-2016. Michael has more than 15 years of experience implementing ecological restoration projects and he has supervised the planting of millions of trees on surface mines in 9 states. He is the current co-Team Leader of the Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative's Science Team. Michael has a BS in Biology and MS in Forestry from the University of Kentucky, where he focused his studies on linking American chestnut restoration to surface mine reforestation. -- About Green Forests Work -- Approximately one million acres of Appalachian forests have been removed by surface mining. Green Forest Works’ mission is to restore healthy and productive forests on formerly mined lands in the United States’ Appalachian region and beyond. Reforestation efforts play a large role in mitigating climate related issues. Not only do reforestation projects help reduce carbon pollution, but also helps with land erosion, community development, healthy and thriving animal habitats, and overall improves local and global ecosystems. Since 2009, they've planted more than 5 million trees across more than 9,400 acres. Michael French has more than 15 years of experience implementing ecological restoration projects and he has supervised the planting of millions of trees on surface mines in 9 states.
