Text: Proverbs 11:22 (ESV)   22 Like a gold ring in a pig's snout is a beautiful woman without discretion.   BEAUTY AND DISCRETION   What is discretion? This is a person's awareness of what is appropriate, respectable, well-mannered, or dignified. Thus, a woman with "discretion," in this case, is one who acts sensibly and with self-control, as opposed to one who is crude, offensive, or "tacky." The culture of women wearing nose rings for ornamental purposes was a practice in Israel as it is common in many parts of the world today. Because pigs are unclean animals, the comparison made here is meant to raise eyebrows. The disgusting and filthy snout of a pig is the last place for an expensive and beautiful ring to be placed. What a waste!   The life of Queen Jezebel is a classic example of the incompatibility of outward beauty and her ugly and immoral character. It does not fit. She is traditionally assumed to be very beautiful, but in the eyes of God ugly as a pig. She possessed the seven things that God hates. (see Prov 6:16–19). She hated and killed the Lord's prophets (1 Kings 18:4); led Israel into Baal worship (1 Kings 21:25–26), and planned to kill Elijah (1 Kings 19:1–2). The earth's last picture of Jezebel was a woman with a painted face and an adorned head (2 Kings 9:30). But moments later, she was thrown from a window, trampled by horses, and eaten by dogs (2 Kings 9:31–37). Her rebellion against God, lack of morality, and character brought her to a horrific end.   A woman’s beauty is enhanced by her discretion. She is the virtuous woman. She is priceless as Proverbs 31:10 says she is "far more precious than jewels." The apostle Peter in the New Testament stresses that genuine attractiveness is not achieved by adorning the body.
