Description
Jailing Children for Failure to Pay Administrative Fees and Costs, Life without Parole, Solitary Confinement, Juvenile Sex Offender Registration, Expungement of Juvenile Records and the "Kids for Cash" Tragedy Discussion with Marsha Levick on the various administrative fees and costs imposed by the juvenile justice system and the practice of incarcerating impecunious youth. We discuss the institutional racism of the juvenile criminal justice system with youth of colour more likely to be convicted and more likely to be sentenced to detention than their white peers. We also discuss the reprehensible practices of sentencing juveniles to life without parole and the use of solitary confinement. We further discuss hurdles associated with the expungement of juvenile records, transfers to the adult criminal justice system and issues associated with the registration of juvenile sex offenders. Additionally, we discuss the tragedy in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania of the bribery of judicial officials by the owner of a private detention facility to increase the number of children being sent there and the length of their stay.
