Real Potential
I really really wanted to like this, like- what a freakin’ cool idea. These books are completely worthy of real dissection in this way, however, your approach and analysis... I can’t get past it. For that, I’m sincerely sorry. A couple of random notes on episode 1: Wait really? You commend the Dursley’s commitment to normalcy?? That’s just crazy. Committed to normalcy and blinded by it. This is what had kept them from loving their hurting orphaned nephew and emotionally abusing him for 11 years. The view point that committing to normalcy, in this way, lacks real compassion and awareness of a world that functions so far away from whatever “normalcy” is. Not to mention reflective of people who live in a way blind to the hurt that happens right in their neighborhood. I get that your interpretation of it is more about people living habitually, but that kinda misses the point of the characters. Also, Dumbledore isn’t committed to seeing the best in people. I will say this one is less obvious though. I would just think someone who is researching these books in this way would already know that. He is committed to problem solving (for the good of people, mind you). He can, essentially, sees to the core of everyone and dissects them with intentionality. This is what informs the way he speaks to each individual, and explains why he can reach them where they are at (mentally and emotionally). You see this as the books progress. It’s a method to understand the world better and move through it effectively; this is why he kept so many people at an arms length his entire life. Also shown in the later books. He is kind and loving and this is the central vein of his character, but it’s important to understand his ulterior motives too. Here I stop, cause ranting is fruitless. I just want to make the point that this podcast doesn’t dig deep enough or really even see the heart of the books. Which really stinks because I wanted this to be something much deeper and insightful. Maybe I just started off on the wrong foot though... I will revisit and relisten in the future. Fantastic idea though :)
