At 9:20 PM on December 29, 1972, Eastern Air Flight 401 took off from New York’s JFK with 163 passengers and 13 crew members on board. The flight went well that evening and at 11:30 PM, as the plane started its descent, Captain Bob Loft came over the speaker to welcome passengers to Miami. Twelve minutes later at 11:42 PM, the plane crashed into the Everglades at 225 miles per hour.
