Lucky you
I have been in this hobby for nearly 20 years, so I’ve experienced loads of reviews and discussions of games. Today, we have Youtube, magazines, websites, blogs, and the venerable podcast. With all that, it is hard to find a consistent, reliable source of good opinion backed by integrity and entertainment. Well, it was hard. However you got here, be thankful that you can stop searching for the best source of information on “designer board games.” Edward and Tony, the hosts of Heavy Cardboard, love board games. That love comes across in just a few minutes of listening. You’ll also quickly discover that they have a great rapport and articulate their thoughts very coherently. Yet, their greatest strength lies in their integrity. They don’t “review” a game until they’ve played it multiple times with different groups of people, and best of all, they are not afraid to say that a game does not live up to their highest standards. These guys know the difference between a good, fun game and a classic game with a depth that will not be found without repeated, contemplative play. Heck, they frequently disagree with each other, but never in an uncivil manner. It is hard to walk that line as a critic. You have to be a super-fan. You need an unbridled enthusiasm for the subject. But, you have to be willing to express disappointment and suggest improvement for the things you love. Do that with intelligence and wit, twice a month for a couple years, and you can reach the stature of Heavy Cardboard.

Since I found these guys after they were the only ones who had any coverage on the fantastic Three Kingdoms Redux, I've grown to really appreciate their opinions on games. A...Read full review »

I really enjoy pocasts with to buddies that talk about the kinds of games they are passionate about, like this one. Heavy games may not be my passion but their excitement and interest is what makes me what to listen and maybe want to try out something beyond my comfort range.

The best podcast focusing on the heavier boardgames. If you are interested in heavy boardgames that are not always wargames these are the two gentlemen for you. I hope they stay around for awhile.
