Chevalier, Chief Enforcer for his heku faction, is sent on a mission to discover why a mortal woman is being victimized by his own species.  One of the strict rules of the heku is not to feed from unwilling donors, and it's Chevalier's job to enforce those laws. Emily, a rancher from Montana, has spent her entire life fighting off what she believed to be vicious vampire attacks.  She runs the ranch with her abusive husband Keith, and her invalid father.  When Chevalier arrives to investigate reports of the heku attacks on the ranch, he finds an unnatural and unprecedented attraction to Emily, something completely unknown to his kind.
