“I spend at least 20 hours a week driving to and from work. I started listening to podcasts in an attempt to transform this mundane routine into a more positive use of time. Then I discovered the Hellboy Book Club. Sandwiched in between hardcore history and jazz podcasts, this show is a nice pallet cleanser. Funny, educational and super nerdy, the hosts are becoming the friends I never knew I needed. My Dad and brothers - huge fans of Star Wars, Marvel and DC - are my usual go to when I have comics talk I need to get out of my system; but for some reason they’ve never given Hellboy a shot. Hellboy, despite its pulpy trappings, seems to attract a more intellectual fan base, whose devotion to the mythos expands beyond the pages into a broader pursuit of knowledge about folklore, classic literature and the occult. I don’t say this in a snobby “Frasier” sense, but rather to describe an open mindedness that brings people from all different backgrounds and beliefs together with a shared love of art, storytelling and monsters. Also a hatred of Nazis, f*** those guys. It’s hard to imagine any Hellboy fan not feeling like they’ve found their tribe with this book club, especially with the time they spend responding to listener feedback. Honestly, if any of the Hellboy/BPRD creators are tuning in, they’re probably learning a thing or two as well. Lastly, to the hosts of the show - no need to apologize for every rabbit hole you go down! With a universe this rich it’s nice to have somebody highlighting the best references we might have missed. Until Hecate eats pancakes, make mine Mignola!”
