“As someone who wasn’t really raised religiously but passively absorbed a lot of the iconic stories of the Old and New Testaments, I’ve always wondered where these stories came from and what the people depicted in them were really like. I’ve longed for some historical context to these stories.
This podcast goes much further than I ever could’ve imagined in illuminating these topics. I’m currently partway through the New Testament sweep, and I’m amazed at how Mr. Stevens is able to portray the characters in the Bible (and the imagined scribes penning the accounts of those events generations later) as living, breathing people with their own motivations and agendas. He presents these familiar characters of with humor and sympathy, and his modern colloquialisms often help bring the stories to life. (The early churches aren’t churches, in his telling. They’re “Jesus clubs!” His episode which imagines a pagan getting invited to an early church meeting in Greece- and being dumbfounded- is amazing).
There are areas which are a little dry, but that is to be expected. Without a discussion of the complex Jewish religious landscape with its myriad sects (Saducees! Pharisees! Essenes! Samaritans!) one couldn’t later understand the world that Christianity emerged into.
So far it’s been really interesting watching the followers of an ancient religion adapt to a changing world, and react as their belief system jumps to entirely new people and morphs some more.
Also, I can’t leave without commenting on the amazing quality of Mr. Steven’s voice. I could probably listen to him read the phone book. Listening to him read Bible passages is a true, melodious joy.”
