“I have been enjoying this, but it is not the podcast to make you literate in German history if you don’t already have a good idea about it. For example, #50 assumes one knows about Prussia, its culture and how it came to be. Whereas one probably has just a caricature in mind. (Btw, #50 has moments of hilarity which had people on the streets of Lagos turning to look when I laughed out loud, but still ...)
Travis clearly knows his subject really well, but only about 50% of what is running through his head seems to make it into the podcast, so episodes come across as disjointed. Informality and pop culture references are fine, and I learned to live with ‘anyways’, but so many references to ‘spoiler alert!’, what ‘we’re going to get to’ and unfinished sentences ... make it stop! Please!
I came to realise that I enjoyed the early shows because - due to listening to other history podcasts - I could put what Travis was talking about into context.
Having come this far, I will continue to the last episode (October 2019), but hoping for more chronology and coherence if and when the series resumes.”
