“Ken Levine is a Hollywood writer with an impeccable resumé—with his partner David Isaacs, Ken served as show runner of M*A*S*H during the show’s peak years and contributed mightily to “Cheers” throughout its eleven season run. He and David also wrote many memorable scripts for “Frasier,”“The Simpsons,”“Wings,” and “Becker,” as well as a handful of produced screenplays and two or three TV shows of their own creation. In between script assignments, Ken somehow found time to carve out a second career as a Major League Baseball play-by-play announcer, and to write a series of well-received stage plays, and to moonlight as a much in-demand TV director. In what little spare time he has, Ken teaches comedy classes and conducts weekend seminars for promising newcomers. Of course, a lot of Hollywood players give lip service to the importance of “giving back” by sharing their hard-won knowledge with younger talents—but in Ken’s case, that’s practically a credo.
For years now, on his blog, By Ken Levine, Ken has dispensed invaluable practical information about the industry for fans and would-be writers, directors, and performers, much of of it rooted in Ken’s own vast tinsel town experience. With Hollywood & Levine, Ken expands his act to the podcast arena with a weekly compendium of show business anecdote, advice, and Hollywood lore, served up with wit and a winning confidence by Ken, who can now add podcast host and producer to his overstuffed resume.
As of this writing, he’s logged fewer than thirty installments of Hollywood & Levine, but already Ken’s listeners have been treated to a series of entertaining shows that delve into the nuts and bolts of topics as varied as comedy writing, sports announcing, indie filmmaking, voice-over performing, Top 40 radio dee-jaying, and stand-up comedy. One particularly memorable episode featured a line-by-line dissection of a one-act play that revealed as much about comedy execution and construction in a single half-hour as most comedy workshops might deliver in an entire semester.
Of course, Ken’s podcast is more than a series of “How to” lessons. Recent episodes have taken us behind the scenes at Disneyland, escorted us backstage for the final episode of “Cheers,” and even invited us to join Ken at a Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue premiere party, complete with a cameo appearance by Beyoncé. As with so many of Ken’s tales, you had to be there—and, fortunately for us, Ken was. And we can be equally thankful that he’s willing to take us along as he spins the details of his four decades as a top-tier Hollywood writer into a must-listen podcast for anyone interested in comedy and the people who make us laugh.”
