IVF Episode Feedback
First I want to thank Heather for addressing the IVF topic with so much compassion. I went through a period of infertility before conceiving my first child and it has been deeply painful to see many Catholics addressing this topic without compassion and without even mentioning how difficult the cross of infertility is. I have found that the majority of people talking about this issue are not people who have gone through infertility themselves and it can be annoying to hear Catholics with many children telling us that children are such a gift. So thank you for addressing this in a sensitive way. That being said I do want to offer some constructive criticism when discussing infertility, especially to Catholics who carry this cross. The things that Catholic women going through infertility are most tired of hearing were all mentioned in this podcast: 1) the age old “You should try napro technology”. Unfortunately most people recommending napro don’t understand that napro doesn’t mean a pregnancy and that many women live in areas where they cannot access this care. 2) Catholics who haven’t experienced infertility love to remind others that hyperfertility is also a cross. I’m sure it is, but to women experiencing infertility this feels like a slap in the face. We cannot compare crosses, but try to imagine your life without your children and having spent years yearning for them. 3) although the purpose of this episode was to discuss IVF and I know there are many Catholic women who don’t know that IVF is immoral, many Catholic women do and being constantly reminded that IVF is wrong because we aren’t owed children gets annoying. Infertile Catholics want less yelling from the pulpit about IVF and more compassion. IVF is immoral and infertility is a heavy heavy cross. Those two realities exist at the same time. Just remember that infertility is hard to hear about from someone who hasn’t experienced it. Some of my favorite podcasts I’ve heard about infertility are when infertile women share their stories with people who don’t know what it’s like.
