Sophia Saze is an artist, performer, musician, producer, DJ and label owner of Dusk and Haze. Born in Georgia and having grown up in the US, her sonic DNA has been shaped by a range of experiences and cultures. Sophia started venturing in the field, with trip hop and house and eventually landed on planet techno, which became her artistic home. She continues to focus on crafting her production, often centred on field recordings and has been releasing music for Francis Harris’ Kingdoms and her own Dusk and Haze. In this chat, we talk about Sophia’s journey where commitment has been a constant factor throughout her studies, and jobs thereafter (we also learn about an unusual job offer by the Central Intelligence Agency!). The artist talks about the challenges of leaving a secure job to focus on music and overcoming pressure from people doubting your work. We chat about Dusk and Haze from before it became a label in 2017 to new plans, including supporting emerging producers access tools and resources. And while Sophia shares about her creative process and writing her album ‘Self’, we are reminded that music fundamentally is a work that feels amazing when it comes from the heart.
