“I really love the idea of this podcast, which is these two sisters retelling paranormal experiences and playing off their sisterly bond in doing so. Lindsey and Rebekah are at their best when they meet these stories with humor and a healthy dose of empathy for the person whose story they’re telling.
Which makes it all the more disheartening when they say things like “we have to acknowledge racism” and then fail to interrogate their own role in the appropriation of stories like the Wendigo. They’ve skirted around that, saying things like “the current depiction is a Hollywood invention,” but then turn around a say things like “but *my* Wendigo tattoo will have antlers,” demonstrating a lack of insight into the ways that such folklore continues to be misrepresented and how this harms already marginalized communities. Especially since many online articles already exist *from* people in these communities talking about how this kind of appropriation is hurtful and unnecessary. If you look into antlered beings, there are already other examples from different European cultures that don’t involve the needless appropriation of something that white settlers half heard and decided to turn into something “ooky spooky” for their own fun.
I listened all the way to the most recent episode to see if there was a shift in perspective, but there hasn’t been, which really bums me out. I don’t know if I’ll choose to continue listening, but I hope that these ladies do take more time to dig deeper in their research, rather than stopping at what seems coolest. I do understand that this is not their full time job, but when you are intentionally building an audience, as they seem to be, they have a responsibility to triple check themselves, especially when they’re speaking on topics outside of their own experience and from a position of privilege.”
