Description
Ari Aster's Beau is Afraid is first up, spoiler free review! From the auteur that gave us Hereditary and birthed Midsommar comes his third feature film, Beau is Afraid! Ari Aster said after horror, his third film would be either a melodrama or a comedy- Joaquin Phoenix's legendary performance in Beau is Afraid gives us both! The Odyssey if the epic was told while you were on copious amounts of edibles, this is a movie you have to experience to be a part of the insanity that is the conversation surrounding this divisive film.  Unique cinema is the theme of this episode, and Richard Linklater's A Scanner Darkly fits that theme perfectly! A Scanner Darkly is considered a fictional biography by Philip K. Dick and this incredibly unique Rotoscoping technology and animation was the most insane, and I argue perfect, way to bring that novel to life! Keanu Reeves, ever heard of him!? What about the infamous Winona Ryder, Robert Downey Jr., and the great Woody Harrelson!? This film is STAR studded and will probably be one of the most unique movies you've ever seen but never heard of, fix that now and go watch this one because we deep dive into A Scanner Darkly (2006) and spoilers ensue!  Last but certainly not least, 1931's German Expressionist film M. M, Original title: M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder, is Fritz Lang's dark masterpiece right after the silent film era, and right before he and Peter Lorre fled the Nazis, but maybe the Metropolis director's best movie! M (1931) is regarded as the first modern serial killer movie EVER, and boy does it fit the bill. The police in a German city are after a child-murderer, yet he eludes them. Then the mob gets involved in what becomes one of the greatest manhunts ever to be captured on film. A mixture of German expressionism, noir, and almost monster film comes together to create an unforgettable masterpiece and IMDB's top 100 movies of all time! Explore M with us and find out why this nearly 100 year old movie still holds up, still has the most haunting and chilling opening scene in cinema history, and what makes this movie that even the Nazis fought back against so special!  Viva la Cinema!
